Beyond Prescription: Taking Ownership of Your Healing Journey

June 02, 20254 min read

As a healthcare professional and a patient, I’ve lived on both sides of the healing journey. For years, I faithfully followed the conventional medical model—prescribe, treat, manage. Yet, I also know the frustration of doing everything “right” and still not getting better. That moment when you're told, “You just have to live with it,” can feel like the end of hope. But I’m here to say: it doesn’t have to be.

Healing is not a one-size-fits-all experience. True healing often begins with an open mind and the courage to take ownership of your health, even when that means exploring paths not typically discussed in a doctor’s office.

When Traditional Medicine Reaches Its Limits

Four years ago, my world shifted after a traumatic accident. I was left with debilitating symptoms: constant dizziness, sensitivity to light, chronic head pressure, and limited mobility. I couldn’t drive. I walked with a cane. I was labeled a fall risk; a shadow of my former self.

As a pharmacist, I knew what the system had to offer: nerve blocks, prescription medications, physical therapy. I gave it my all, working with a dedicated team. Progress came, then plateaued. Eventually, I was told, “We’ve done all we can. Now it’s just about managing the symptoms.”

But I couldn’t accept that. I refused to believe that this was the best life had to offer me.

Choosing the Road Less Traveled

Four years ago, my world shifted after a traumatic accident. I was left with debilitating symptoms: constant dizziness, sensitivity to light, chronic head pressure, and limited mobility. I couldn’t drive. I walked with a cane. I was labeled a fall risk; a shadow of my former self.

To my amazement, my symptoms began to improve. Gradually, I regained mobility. The dizziness faded. I started living again. When I told my healthcare providers about the therapy, I expected curiosity or support. Instead, I was met with silence, skepticism or outright dismissal.

That was the moment I realized how deeply entrenched our system is in its comfort zone. Many professionals, even well-meaning ones, resist what they don’t understand. But what happens to the patients caught in that resistance?

The Divide Between Conventional and Holistic Healing

There is no denying the power of conventional medicine. It saves lives every day. But we must also recognize its limitations especially when it comes to chronic conditions, invisible illnesses, or recovery that defies protocols.

Why do we hesitate to explore complementary options? Why are patients discouraged from trying safe, research-backed alternatives that might offer hope?

Holistic therapies aren’t about replacing traditional care they’re about expanding it. Combining approaches can offer a more complete, person-centered model of healing that honors both science and the body’s natural wisdom.

Empowering Women to Trust Themselves

As women, we are often taught to defer to authority, especially when it comes to health. But what if you know, deep down, that something isn’t right? What if you feel unheard or dismissed?

You are not alone.

If you’re navigating a condition that just won’t improve, despite doing everything you were told, it’s time to ask:

  • Have I explored all my options?

  • Are there safe, alternative methods I could try alongside my current treatments?

  • Am I making choices based on fear—or possibility?

Advocating for yourself isn’t easy, but it’s necessary. Healing starts when we trust our intuition and honor our experiences, not just the textbook.

A Call for a More Open-Minded Healthcare Culture

As healthcare professionals, we can, and must, do better. Supporting a patient’s healing journey means acknowledging that what works for one person may not work for another.

That means being:

  • Open to exploring holistic and complementary approaches

  • Willing to educate ourselves beyond our training

  • Supportive of patient-driven choices that prioritize safety and results

This is not about rejecting medicine. It’s about embracing more: more tools, more perspectives, more hope.

The Power of Community and Connection

Since embracing holistic innovation, I’ve made it my mission to help others who feel stuck, dismissed, or discouraged by the system. I founded Transformation Health Journey and the Live For Your Liver community to support people, especially women who are seeking wellness on their own terms.

I also mentor healthcare professionals and entrepreneurs who are transitioning into purpose-driven, wellness-centered careers. Because I believe that fulfillment in life and health is possible when we step outside of limitations and into alignment.

Your Health, Your Choice

If you’ve ever been told, “There’s nothing more we can do,” I want you to know—there is more. There’s always more. The question is: are you willing to explore it?

Here’s how to begin:

  • Do your research – Look into safe, evidence-informed holistic therapies.

  • Ask questions – Be your own best advocate.

  • Find open-minded professionals – Seek providers who respect your values and are willing to collaborate.

Your Story Matters

I invite you to reflect on your own journey. Have you ever stepped outside the traditional system to find healing? Has something unconventional helped you when nothing else did?

I would love to hear your story. Your voice could be the encouragement someone else needs to explore their own path and discover the freedom that comes with truly taking ownership of their healing.
